  • i think that the world is changing to much and that some people need to wake up

  • the only people who are still sleeping are the Freedom Loving Free Speech Nation of America. The rest of the world is wide awake.

  • oh ... i didn't realize the "anybody but bush" disease had escaped to the wider world ... be careful what you wish for.

  • The rest of the world is over with "anybody but bush" we're in the anybody but america stage. If you Americans can at the very least get rid of Bush - maybe (and that i mean maybe...) we'll look at you more kindly. And thank you we'll wish for what we want - don't need your approval and/or lectures about "being careful." Don't pretend to be a "friend" when you are obviously an American Nationalist.

  • i hear what you're saying but it's not like that from where i can see things.

chances are good that the play will be shown at another theater now that it's received attention but i doubt that's what the comments are about. it's not like it was banned by the government or that people here don't want to see it - even supporters of israeli militarism would probably go see it, on the belief that art transcends politics. what the cancellation demonstrates is the effectiveness of the propaganda campaign inside the country. replacing bush with another will not change american susceptibility to fearmongering any more than changing a particular head of state in europe will reduce anti-muslim feeling in those countries.

islam is taking the full force of the industrial world's fears about globalization. i'm sure right wingers here and there would love for socialism to look like the enemy but no such luck for them. so, it's muslims - foreign, dark, defiant. this isn't just an american phenomenon, right? and even more not just america because the money paying for this war isn't really ours. it's being borrowed from outside the country and nobody's been refusing our requests.

  • I have to admit, my understanding of 'what makes USA society tick' is informed by little more than Michael Moore's 'Bowling for Columbine'. I'm not knocking Moore, but I'd like to see/read more of that kind of social analysis.

Sadly, with the death of Antony Sampson, we no longer have the regular 'this is the UK' updates, unless anyone knows otherwise...

  • mike moore works hard and tells good stories. definitely not an entire picture but ... the acid he uses for ink reveals much that lies beneath the surface. the only thing that he misses is how incredibly big a few things are in our lives here:

    1) virtually everyone's first aim in life is to get a car, their own car. cars are more important than education or even family. how ugly the roads are, how terribly the environment is suffering - not an issue. to be considered an adult you must have a car.

    2) the weapons industry. by population not many people are directly in the military. but nearly everyone has done work in one way or the other that was paid for by the department of defense. as you can guess it's a huge economic presence and is constantly in the news - who got what military contract, what a weapons development lab is doing, etc.

    3) borrowing money. this is probably a root problem in our ability to see beyond our borders. with most of the population in debt, there's huge pressure to trust whomever's in charge so that the paychecks keep coming and the debts get paid. otherwise a household might bring years of trouble on itself.

    4) the rapture. hell isn't waiting - it's coming to get you, boys and girls. better do what daddy says or you and the rest of the heretics will be eaten where you stand. it's like a drug, only, if you say "no," you die.
